Bird describes expressing inner states as the means that artists use to describe what can not be seen or spoken. He further mentions artist like Kandinsky and references their desire to express what was being said from their soul. He also references where this art was labeled as degenerate and that this art form still remains a political act.
Expressing my inner feelings in my own art is something I do even when I am not trying to be abstract. However I have found that when I am doing abstract expressionism like work I have to "turn off" my brain. If I don't I've found that I can't actually do it and my thoughts get in the way of what I am trying to express.
